Production: I Teatri Reggio Emilia, Italia

Based on Oscar Wilde's work, Salome is the most daring title in Richard Strauss' production. It is a work charged with eroticism and sexuality, and has a dramatic capacity that is largely unparalleled in his repertoire.

The story is well known: Salome is fascinated by John the Baptist and her stepfather, Herod, is fascinated by her. She asks Herod for the prophet's head in return for a sensuous dance. When she gets it, Salome kisses it over and over. Horrified upon watching the scene, Herod orders that she be killed. A non-consummated love triangle that ends in an orgy of blood and death.

The premiere, in 1905, caused a huge scandal. One century later, it will premiere in Tenerife directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi. In this production, which was originally staged at the Teatro Reggio Emilia and has never before been performed in Spain, the director from Milan gives free rein to his stage and conceptual sensitivity. It is, furthermore, a good opportunity to enjoy the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife in a work where the orchestra plays a major role.
