Josep Caballé-Domenech was born in Barcelona, into a family of musicians. He studied piano, percussion, singing and violin. He received classes from David Zinnman and Jorma Panula at the Aspen Music Festival, from Sergiu Comissiona, and also at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
He has conducted the major European orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic in London, the BBC National Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, the wdr Rundfunk-Orchester Köln, the Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester, the Stockholm Opera, the Česká Filharmonie, the Filharmonie Brno, the Orquestra Nacional do Porto, the Malmö Symfoniorkester, the Orchestre National de Belgique, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Dublin, the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi and the Trondheim Symfoniorkester, amongst others. He has been principal guest conductor for the Norrköpings Symfoniorkester.
His most recent and upcoming engagements include the production of F. Moreno Torroba's Luisa Fernanda at the Theater an der Wien, with Plácido Domingo, Tosca and Carmen at the Volskoper in Vienna, his debut in Japan with the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, and various engagements with the Radio Symphonie Orchester Wien, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Kungliga Filharmonikerna of Stockholm, the Real Filharmonía de Galicia, the Oviedo Opera, the Borusan Philharmonic Orchestra of Istanbul and the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been invited to conduct, once again, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Trondheim Symfoniorkester and the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona.
He made his debut in the world of opera at the Liceu de Barcelona, conducting W.A. Mozart's opera Così fan tutte. Since then, he has conducted J. Haydn's Il mondo della luna, C. Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore, E. Granados' María del Carmen and Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at this theatre, as well as at the Savonlinna Festival and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Stuttgart Opera and the Volksoper in Vienna, and Puccini's La bohème at the Teatro Nacional São Carlos in Lisbon.
Josep Caballé-Domenech has received the ‘Aspen Prize' from the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen. He was selected as ‘Protégé of Sir Colin Davis' in the first Rolex Mentor and ‘Protégé Arts Initiative' in the 2002-2003 opening cycle.
